16. Her Fearful Symmetry - Audrey Niffennegger

This is not the sort of book I would really choose to read. Chick Lit isn't something I'm into but I inevitably delve into the genre after reading an interesting sounding blurb or review and always come out disappointed. One day I'll learn my lesson. I read the Time Traveller's Wife when I was 15 - back when everyone and their dog did and yes, I cried. I downloaded this after hearing good things but I was left a bit disappointed.

It tells the story of twin American girls who are left an apartment in London by their aunt, who they have never met but was their mother's twin. We know something happened between them but it's a big spoiler to tell you what. The girls go to live in London and become immersed in their aunts former life.

Oh yeh, and their Aunt is a ghost haunting the flat.

Throughout the book one girl meets and begins to kind of fall for their aunts ex, while the other befriends the neighbour with severe OCD. These once close twins start to drift apart and their aunt's ghostiness only gets stronger, with her being able to write using their hands and such.

One day, the aunt is playing with their kitten and accidentally pulls out it's soul. This begins a chain of events which are obviously never going to end well. I won't spoil what does happen but playing with ghosts and souls never ends the way everyone wants it to.

The whole book is basically about the crumbling relationship between the two girls who once were so close they wore matching outfits on a daily basis. It also brings in the lives and goings on of the neighbours in the apartment building, such as Martin who's wife leaves when she can't cope with his OCD anymore. Nothing really HAPPENS. I also found most of the characters totally unlikable. Unless it's intentional, when you can't find one character you like or enjoy in a book, I'd say that's pretty bad.

I read this book super quickly but not because I couldn't put it down. It's an easy read and if you like that sort of thing then I'd say go for it. I much preferred the time traveller's wife and this was just a total let-down.
